The Last Blue Hydrangea of the Season — Emily + Walter at The Lakehouse, Daylesford

Emily and Walter were desperate for blue hydrangea — the real, true blue, to sit against their dresses. It's not a colour you can fake or force, and it's not a colour that waits around. We tracked down the very last of the season from a local farm, cut so fresh it was hardy enough to carry in bouquets out of water. Exactly the right blue, found right at the edge of when it still existed.

For the bridal bouquet we cut mini phalaenopsis orchids — a detail that had our florist friends sliding into the DMs the moment we posted it. The palette ran ivory and green with that soft blue and a little mauve, built from hydrangea, orchid, peony, delphinium and texture, set into a custom run of freestanding arrangements in our signature style: lush groupings of open blooms framing the aisle, texture clouds bookending the walk, and a suspended installation floating open blooms above the main shared table.

The overhead piece had to be finished before 10am, which in practice meant being on site from 6am — so we stayed in Daylesford overnight to make it. Then we stayed the whole day, handed flowers out to guests, packed down, and drove the three hours home in the middle of the night. The kind of day that doesn't show in a photograph, behind the kind of florals that do.
